Among many of the architectural works in Madragoa/Lapa, the Palace of the Dukes of Aveiro, the House of the Marqueses of Abrantes and the oldest and most modest of Lisbon's chapels, that of the Martyrs, stand out. The French Embassy is also there, where Gil Vicente (after Castelo de São Jorge) gave birth to Portuguese theatre.
